General Description

The purpose of this position is to perform entry level library support including shelving library materials, keeping shelves in proper order, prepare and process transit, help prepare the library facilities for program use, answering customer queries, and performing other routine tasks. This position will assist in maintaining a neat and orderly area and provide back-office support for the library and its customers; an understanding of how the library is organized is required.This position works independently with some initial supervision, developing work methods and sequences within specified procedures and work areas.

Duties & Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.

  • Sorts, shelves, relocates, and searches for library materials accurately and efficiently.
  • Shelving library materials according to the Dewey Decimal system and/or alphabetically.
  • Sorting returned items onto carts in preparation for shelving.
  • Regularly review shelves for accuracy of order, re-shelving and shifting materials as needed.
  • Performs inventory inspections.
  • Check-in materials from book drops and clearing patron records when materials are returned.
  • Maintains order and attractiveness of library collections through balancing, edging, and shifting materials.
  • Pulling and processing items from shelves to meet patron holds.
  • Checking materials for damage.
  • Assisting in removing outdated materials from shelves as directed by professional library staff.
  • Assisting in routing books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials to other consortium libraries and sections.
  • Answers in-person inquiries, directional questions, helps customers locate needed materials and refers customers to other appropriate assistance.
  • Physically lifts and arranges the library furniture weighing up to 75 pounds, equipment and facilities for use by various library programs and restores the rooms or locations to an orderly condition following their use.
  • Clears tables and keeps furniture in order.
  • Does simple mending/repair of library materials, labeling and covering.
  • Performs routine circulation duties, including checking in, checking out, and renewing library materials.
  • Assists patrons with technology use, including computers, copier, and fax,
  • Assists with the creation of displays to promote library events and materials.
  • Adheres to library policies and procedures,
  • Assists in other library activities/tasks as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires High school diploma or GED equivalent, excellent customer service skills, and library-related experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Ability to learn library procedures; ability to interact well with people; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to tabulate and compile data accurately; ability to perform detailed tasks; physical ability and stamina to carry large bags of books and library materials; working knowledge of personal computers and pertinent applications; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner.

  • This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in and walking between work areas may be required.
  • Occasionally lifting of objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.
