General Description
The purpose of this position is to semiskilled maintenance tasks in a wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations such as checking pumps and oil levels. Duties include other tasks such as grounds maintenance and working on automotive equipment.This entry level mechanic position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Duties & Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.
- Performs mechanical repairs on various equipment in a wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations.
- Assists maintenance staff in the replacement and repair of plant equipment such as furnaces and electrical appliances.
- Operates a sewer jet/vacuum truck to clean wet wells, manholes and sewer lines.
- Takes flow readings at pumping stations.
- Installs air compressors.
- Checks lift stations and makes necessary repairs.
- Obtains samples of wastewater for testing in laboratory.
- Cleans and paints pump stations and other facilities.
- Performs semiskilled servicing tasks such as tune-ups, washing and oil changes on automotive equipment.
- Replaces brake pads and shoes, carburetors, bearings and fan belts.
- Repairs electrical shorts, drive trains, and other engine parts.
- Performs general custodial work to keep plant, facility and grounds clean and safe.
- Checks electrical equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by one (1) year of experience in mechanical maintenance work of a wastewater facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Requirements
Some knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and tools used in the plumbing trade, electrical trade and mechanical trade; some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with wastewater facilities; some knowledge of the installation and maintenance of an electrical system; good skill in the safe use and care of tools, machine and equipment of the mechanical trades; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; and ability to perform manual work; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers and supervisors; ability to learn and use personal computers and pertinent applications; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner. Must pass testing for substance abuse and criminal background investigation. Must maintain a positive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes harmonious relations with customers, co-workers, and supervisors. Direct deposit of pay required.

Special Certifications and License Requirements
- May be required to pass standardized examination to determine basic knowledge, skills & abilities.
- Must possess or achieve within 6 months of hire and thereafter maintain a valid commercial driver license which will permit the operation of all County commercial type vehicular equipment and maintain an acceptable driving history.
- Must obtain and retain a valid Class F license (handling & transporting liquid wastewater) issued by the State of Delaware and any other such State required license within 12 months of hire in order to retain position.
- Must possess and retain designation as Registered Flagger.
