General Description
The purpose of this position is to perform skilled pipe fitting and electrical pump maintenance and repair of specialized equipment in a wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations. This work group/team leader position works under general supervision independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties & Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.
- Makes mechanical repairs to and operates engines, pumps, valves, electrical and pneumatic controls and compressors.
- Performs repairs on electric motors used for water and sewage pumping.
- Installs, maintains, and replaces electric wiring controls, circuit breakers, switches and light fixtures.
- Installs, maintains, and replaces plumbing lines, pipes and fixtures.
- Installs, maintains, and replaces heating pipes, boiler parts and plumbing fixtures.
- Maintains and repairs hot water tanks, circulating pump, sewage, vacuum and other type pumps.
- Maintains and services sewer system.
- Calibrates, performs preventive maintenance and repairs flow meters, levels recorders, various other instruments throughout the Wastewater Facilities.
- Welds and brazes equipment and machinery.
- Trains and instructs assigned staff in operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
- Oversees and ensures quality of work performed by other Mechanics in assigned area.
- Operates a sewer jet/vacuum truck to clean wet wells, manholes, and sewer lines.
- Performs general custodial work to keep work area and facilities clean and safe.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses in the mechanical trades and four (4) years of experience in mechanical maintenance work involving plumbing, mechanical, and electrical repairs and installations, including three (3) years in a wastewater facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Requirements
Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades; good knowledge of machine work and related mechanical trades operations; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with general maintenance operations; ability to observe and enforce appropriate safety precautions; skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines and equipment of the mechanical trades; ability to understand and carry out difficult oral and written instructions; demonstrated ability in instrument calibration and welding and brazing of metals; ability to perform manual work; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers and supervisors; working knowledge of personal computers and pertinent applications; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner.

- This is very heavy work requiring exertion more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, More than 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Special Certifications and License Requirements
- Must possess and retain a valid commercial driver license which will permit the operation of all County commercial type vehicular equipment and maintain an acceptable driving history.
- Must possess and retain a valid Class F license (handling & transporting liquid wastewater) issued by the State of Delaware and any other such State required license within 12 months of hire in order to retain position.
- Must possess and retain designation as Registered Flagger.
