General Description
The purpose of this job is to perform responsible advanced emergency medical treatment of injured/ill patients in response to emergency calls, preparing and maintaining detailed records.
This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Duties & Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.
- Responds to emergency medical calls involving chest pain, possible heart attacks, respiratory distress, unconsciousness or other conditions that might require advanced life support including treatment techniques such as airway management, I.V. Therapy, drug administration, cardiac monitoring and defibrillating and electrocardiogram strip interpretation, drives equipment and administers first aid, transports victims to emergency care facilities.
- Provides emergency medical care in accordance with established protocol, guidelines, written or verbal instructions from physicians.
- Observes patient responses; identifies diagnostic signs which may require communications with medical facility for advice and direction; administers medications and treatment as instructed by physicians.
- Maintains accurate and complete pre-hospital patient care reports/insurance forms.
- Checks and restocks the ambulance for proper equipment and supplies.
- Performs general maintenance work and upkeep on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.
- Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college supplemented by six (6) months of emergency medical experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Requirements
Good knowledge of and skill in advanced emergency care procedures; knowledge of physiology for diagnostic purposes; knowledge of pharmacology; strong knowledge of traffic rules and regulations; ability to safely operate a vehicle on the road in emergency situations at high speed; skill in operating advanced emergency care equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare accurate written reports; ability to manage people in stressful situations for the care and safety of the patient; skill in minor maintenance of emergency vehicles; good driving record (to be determined by review); excellent moral character (to be determined by a background investigation); must demonstrate a high degree of dependability; ability to perform as part of a team; good judgment; integrity; tact; operational knowledge of personal computers and pertinent applications; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner.

- This is very heavy work requiring exertion more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, More than 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Physical attendance at work site is required to perform manual tasks, Provide immediate service to onsite customers and supervise or interact with work groups.
- Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, Operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Mental acuity is required to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Special Certifications and License Requirements
- May be required to pass standardized examination to determine basic knowledge, skills & abilities.
- Must possess and retain State of Delaware Paramedic certification, National Registry of EMTs Paramedic certification, and current BCLS, ACLS, CPR, BTLS Advanced and/or PHTLS certification and others as required.
- Must work a rotating 24-hour, seven days a week shift, as assigned.
- May be required to pass testing of physical strength and agility to qualify for and retain position.
- Must pass testing for infectious diseases.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
