General Description
Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, the County Engineer is responsible for senior engineering responsibilities in the Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW). This position may be assigned supervisory responsibilities related to the Engineering Division. The County Engineer directly supports the regional wastewater treatment plant and related infrastructure. The County Engineer may serve as the interim or acting Director of Public Works in the Director’s absence. They also may represent Kent County with internal and external stakeholders, particularly in relation to the regional wastewater system.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in engineering (master’s degree in engineering desired) and six to ten years of progressively responsible experience as a registered professional engineer in the practice of civil engineering any equivalent experience and training determined by Levy Court. This includes at least five years of engineering experience in wastewater treatment.
Additional Requirements
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering relating to public works; comprehensive knowledge of design, construction, and maintenance of sewage and drainage systems, thorough knowledge of laws and regulations relating to public works; ability to perform highly technical engineering studies and to provide advice on complex engineering matters; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with subordinates, contractors, developers, County officials, Federal and State agencies and the public; ability to lead and supervise the work of professional and non-professional staff; ability to obtain the cooperation and assistance of others; good professional judgment; working knowledge of personal computers and related automated engineering systems; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner. Must have state-issued Professional Engineer certification that is transferrable to Delaware Association of Professional Engineers. Possession and retention of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Delaware. Must pass testing for substance abuse. Direct deposit of pay required.
