General Description

The purpose of this position is to skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of specialized equipment in a wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations. This career ladder series position works under general supervision independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties & Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.

  • Installs, maintains, and replaces electric wiring controls, circuit breakers, switches and light fixtures.
  • Installs, maintains, and replaces plumbing lines, pipes and fixtures.
  • Installs, maintains, and replaces heating pipes, boiler parts and plumbing fixtures.
  • Repairs minor parts for gas and electric appliances.
  • Repairs and replaces worn faucets, sinks, sewers, storm sewers, pipes and couplings.
  • Maintains and repairs gas and oil-fired furnaces, hot water tanks, circulating pump, sewage, vacuum and other type pumps.
  • Takes pressure and feeds readings for fuel on generators.
  • Installs, removes and repairs pumps and motors.
  • Maintains and services sewer system.
  • Operates a sewer jet/vacuum truck to clean wet wells, manholes, and sewer lines.
  • Maintains and repairs domestic well pumps.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Assists in training of less skilled Maintenance Mechanics.
  • Performs general custodial work to keep work area and facilities clean and safe.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by three (3) years of experience in mechanical maintenance work involving plumbing, mechanical, and electrical repairs and installations, including one (1) year in a wastewater facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Requirements

Good knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades; good knowledge of machine work and related mechanical trade operations; good knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with general maintenance; ability to observe and enforce appropriate safety precautions; skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines and equipment of the mechanical trades; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers and supervisors; working knowledge of personal computers and pertinent applications; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner.

  • This is very heavy work requiring exertion more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, More than 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, Operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Special Certifications and License Requirements

  • Must possess or achieve within 6 months of hire and thereafter maintain a valid commercial driver license which will permit the operation of all County commercial type vehicular equipment and maintain an acceptable driving history.
  • Must obtain and retain a valid Class F license (handling & transporting liquid wastewater) issued by the State of Delaware and any other such State required license within 12 months of hire in order to retain position.
  • Must possess and retain designation as Registered Flagger.
