Pay Range $61,048 - $89,107

General Description

Performs skilled technical work supporting the County’s building inspection, code enforcement, plan review, and permitting operations. Provides cross-functional coverage in the field and at the permit counter to ensure timely customer service, workload balance, and continuity of operation. Work includes reviewing building plans for code compliance, conducting field inspections for construction and property maintenance, processing permit applications, assisting the public, and supporting enforcement actions. Performs related work as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

This position is designed as a flexible, cross-trained role capable of supporting multiple divisions within Inspections & Enforcement. Employees in this class perform duties traditionally associated with Building Codes Inspectors, Plans Reviewers, and Permit Technicians and may be assigned to any of these functions based on operational needs. Work is performed under general supervision with some latitude for independent judgment in applying technical standards.

  • Conduct residential/light commercial building inspections for compliance with building, mechanical, plumbing, accessibility, and energy codes.
  • Perform field investigations for property maintenance, zoning violations, and unpermitted construction.
  • Conduct basic-to-intermediate residential plans review.
  • Provide permit counter support including intake, processing, and routing of applications.
  • Assist customers with code requirements and application materials.
  • Maintain inspection logs, enforcement case notes, and permitting records.
  • Assist in developing checklists and SOPs.
  • Participate in continuing education and cross-training across functions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Additional Requirements

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of planning; good knowledge of the laws and regulations related to planning; ability to perform technical research work; good judgment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers, supervisor, officials, and the public; working knowledge of personal computers and pertinent applications; regular and timely attendance; performance of duties in a safe manner. Must pass testing for substance abuse and criminal background investigation. Must maintain a positive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes harmonious relations with customers, co-workers, and supervisors. Direct deposit of pay required.

Special Certifications and License Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must possess and retain ICC Certification Program modules: B1 – Residential Building Inspector, Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner, and Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector.
